What Is Counselling?

Counselling is based on listening to you, and helping to offer you space to work out your own way forward in a difficult or stressful time in your life.

For all of us, there are times when we struggle with issues, and counselling can help us to cope with our problems more easily and effectively.

These issues can include a wide range of difficulties.

Counselling provides you with a chance to step back from the day-to-day routines and pressures of your life, to recover a sense of who you are, and help you to live a more fulfilled life.

Counselling helps you to talk openly about what is going on your life.

Counselling does not offer you advice, nor does it pass judgement on you or your way of life, but respects and accepts you as you are.    It seeks to help you to make sense of your own life.

Your counsellor seeks first to build trust between you both, with the assurance that all you say and share is confidential.

Your counsellor is committed to your welfare, and to protecting you as far as possible from harm.     As you begin to share your issues, this can bring painful feelings and memories to the surface, and your counsellor will work with you to support you and keep you safe.

Counselling helps you to understand the things that have happened in your life, and how they have shaped the way you are, and how you connect with the other people in your life.

It helps to build your self-confidence.

It helps you to address the anxieties you may have about the future.

It helps you to recognise what your options are and encourage you to make your own choice and move forward.
