Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost?
We ask clients to help towards the cost of counselling by contributing what they can reasonably afford. When you book your appointment to start counselling you will be sent guidelines for how much we encourage you to pay according to your means. Our ethose is not to turn away anyone who is in need and so we extens our ervice to a very limited number of clients who genuinely struggle to donate. It costs PCS £55 for each appointment delivered and we rely on client donations to remain financially viable as a service.
Should the amount you are paying ever become difficult please discuss with your counsellor
How soon can I start?
We work to respond to your enquiry as quickly as possible. First we ask you to come for a appointment with one of our more experienced counsellors to identify your needs so that we can then match you up with the most appropriate counsellor. The demand for our services has increased and we operate a waiting list and this will be discussed with you during your intake session.
Can I be sure that what I say remains confidential?
What you say to the counsellor is confidential between you and them. Confidentiality is a fundamental principle of counselling. But there are three rare situations in which confidentiality may have to be breached: if you are at risk of suicide, the counsellor will want to liaise with your GP to help support you through such a dark time, and would share with you their intention to contact your doctor. Any incident of abuse of children that comes under the Children Act 2004, must legally be reported to the Social Services. Any contravention of the Terrorism Act must be reported to the police.
Do I have to come every week?
Counselling works best with regular sessions once a week, which allows you and your counsellor to develop the necessary trust and rapport for the work. Please discuss with your counsellor if you need to miss sessions due to any reason.
How long does counselling take?
We offer open-ended counselling, according to our client's needs. We review progress every 12 weeks and together we agree what your ongoing needs are and what further appointments would be beneficial.
Can I express a preference for a male or female counsellor?
Yes, this is possible. We tend to have more female counsellors than male.
What happens if I miss a session?
If you need to miss a session, it is important to give your counsellor notice. Missed sessions without notice will need to be paid for.
Where does the counselling take place?
We are fortunate to have the use of rooms at Petersfield Hospital for our evening counselling sessions. Daytime sessions for those who cannot attend in the evenings, are held at the Centre, Dragon Street Petersfield and Sacred Heart Church Bordon
What qualifications do the counsellors have for doing their work?
Our counsellors have all been professionally trained, and are registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. We offer places to carefully selected student counsellors in their last year of training who have received a certificate of competence for their work.
What if I already know the counsellor who is allocated to me?
It is normally best to avoid having counselling with someone you already know in another context, to protect boundaries and confidentiality. If you realise you know the person, do make that clear and request someone else.
